California lost 33,500 jobs in August, and the unemployment rate ticked up to 12.4 percent, the Employment Development Department said Friday.
Stephen Levy, with the Center for Continuing Study of the California Economy in Palo Alto, said it was "surprising and disappointing" that the state lost private sector jobs last month even though employers nationwide added to private sector payrolls.
