Reid to Nevada: ‘Time to Outlaw Prostitution’
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid Tuesday called on Nevada’s legislature to outlaw the state’s prostitution industry.In remarks to legislature in Carson City, Mr. Reid said he has talked to “parents who don’t want their children to look out of a school bus and see a brothel. Or to live in a state with the wrong kind of red lights.”
“If we want to attract businesses to Nevada that puts people back to work, the time has come for us to outlaw prostitution,” Mr. Reid said.
Mr. Reid maintains conservative Mormon values personally, but he has long taken a relaxed attitude toward his home state’s casino and brothel industries. In gatherings, he often tells audiences about how his mother washed laundry for the local brothel in his hometown of Searchlight, outside of Las Vegas.

Harry, this is the oldest profession in the world. It has been in Nevada and legal since Nevada was became a state. The actual one place in America where the job is done right and legal. And Harry wants to push it back into the shadows of pimping and street walkers..... That takes kidneys Harry... That is about as smooth an act as exlax.

However, Tahoe Reno Industrial Center (TRI) is not being impacted by the proximity of our two well-run, legal brothels. There are currently over 85 companies doing business in TRI with 12 million square feet of new facilities being developed over the past few years.
We share the concerns brought about by illegal, unregulated prostitution that is now rampant in many public locations throughout Las Vegas, on internet sex sites and in many of the Nevada strip clubs. This is truly a threat to the public safety as it promotes dangerous and unhealthy sex practices that far too often include underage girls and repulsive pimps. We are in support of any and all state regulation that would curtail such illegal activity, something that truly does tarnish the image of Nevada.
As we understand it, the legislative agenda is busy addressing a multi-billion dollar shortfall. The legal brothel industry helps support the small rural counties where they are located, and thus this action seems unwise. If necessary, we have identified counsel to explore our options. Until then, we will respect the legislative process and respond, if necessary, with testimony at the appropriate time.”
