My brother flew from the cold Peoria Illinois weather to watch some great WHITE SOX, RANGERS,GIANTS and Oakland A's spring training games this year.
We went to see the Chicago White Sox and Texas Rangers games first because if it ain't the White Sox, it really isn't baseball! My niece is a huge White Sox fan and drove down from Vegas to see a few games with us, plus her boyfriend is a pitcher in the Brewers organization.
We did what all mid westerners do when they see each other for the first time in years.. Hugged, opened the refrigerator to grab a cold beer, and started talking about how the White Sox may win the series this year. Then we headed for the park with our closed bags of peanuts and some extra water. We chose to take the lawn seats at $10.00 a pop and since it was a beautiful day to be outside at a ball game in Phoenix Arizona, we slathered on the 70spf and grabbed a hot dog at $5.00 and a cold beer @ $6.75 and were off to a great start of the Sox and the Rangers.
The temperature and all that sunshine didn't help the White Sox, but we were all in Heaven anyway, away from the bad news the world was still offering, you know a Tsunami in Japan, an economy that spits and stutters, That Wisconsin, Ohio, Indiana Bull!
You know all those things that make you wonder why you got out of bed in the first place.
Anyway, The Sox lost the first game, but hey like Cub fans pray every night, There's always tomorrow.
Tomorrow came, and we headed off to see my nieces boyfriend pitch at the Brewers park in Maryvale. The guy has a pretty good arm and he does throw one heck of a slider. He told me later that this is his 4th year with Brewers organization. One of the better pitching organizations in either league.
Well the spring training games all start at 1:05 so we left the Brew Crew and "Wild Thing Willy" to go see the WHITE SOX battle the Dodgers! We were there a little late and a little hung over, but after walking in and almost getting hit by Tommy Lasorda's golf cart, it didn't matter! This was the one thing that no foreign country could steal from AMERICA.....
THIS WAS BASEBALL ! This was SPRING TRAINING IN ARIZONA! A beautiful 85 Degrees with a slight breeze!
This time it was Right field and the grass could not have been greener, the sky any bluer and the beer any colder.
We yelled and screamed and watched as the Dodgers pitching just couldn't come close to the White Sox batters power to get on base. All of the Sox played great, all of the Sox were in it to win it!
Sox Win!
And then my brother decided that he had to go to cooperstown in down town Phoenix near the Diamondback Stadium and take everyone to eat a BIG UNIT..... We are talking COOPERSTOWN... Phoenix's own ALICE COOPER who was just inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame. The guy that millions of people love and all of Arizona can't get enough of.
Alice could run for Governor and win handily! Cooperstown is his restaurant and the BIG UNIT is a 22" Hot Dog that makes you go......... AAAAAHHHH, Schools Out, when you bite into it.
We all sat there looking at the 4 BIG UNITS that we had ordered.... My brother said he saw these on a cable show called man versus food. And I am going to see if I can locate that video... These things are huge! If ever in Phoenix, you have got to get downtown and try one of these Hot Dogs.... A cold Beer, and if you come during Spring training a White Sox Game.
This year is going to be the White Sox year to win! Alice Cooper Cooperstown is full of Baseball and Rock and Roll Memorabilia. It's a lot like going to a Ball game that is operated by Bill Veeck. And the Food is awesome!
The true harbinger of spring is not crocuses or swallows returning to Capistrano, but the sound of the bat on the ball.
Bill VeeckThere are only two seasons - winter and Baseball.
